KPop is “Golden”!

KPop Demon Hunters has evolved from a stylish Netflix original into a generational movement. Since its June 2025 release, it has shattered records as the platform’s most-watched film ever, surpassing 540 million views. Its success is driven by a fusion of vibrant animation and an unprecedented musical takeover; it is the first soundtrack in history to land four simultaneous songs in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 10.

The anthem “Golden” became a global phenomenon, recently crossing one billion YouTube views and winning a Grammy. This week, the momentum reached a fever pitch as Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation officially greenlit a sequel, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning. The announcement, coming just days before the 98th Oscars, cements the film’s status as a definitive pop culture milestone.

Do you think KPop Demon Hunters has franchise potential? How might Netflix leverage the success of the film and potential sequel post Oscars?

One response to “KPop is “Golden”!”

  1. Daniel, I completely agree—K-Pop: Demon Hunters definitely has massive franchise potential. First, from an entertainment business perspective, Netflix and Sony would be making a huge strategic mistake if they didn’t capitalize on all this audience interest and awards hype. Second, the storyline left the door wide open for so many different directions. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if we see some spin-offs down the line! Finally, you completely nailed it when you pointed out the magic that Maggie Kang, Chris Appelhans, and their incredible team created. They delivered such a perfect blend of vibrant animation, color, and endearing characters (even the bad guys were adorable!), all set to some seriously catchy beats.
